Concert Band

The Concert Band is the flagship music ensemble for our school and consists of all students enrolled in music from Secondary III to V, as well as students in Secondary II who have demonstrated advanced skill and dedication.

This band performs 2 major concerts and competes at at least 1 international competition per year. Additionally, we play at many school events like the Remembrance Day Mass, Prizes, and Graduation.

Judges at competition are often shocked to learn that this band performs at such a high level while only rehearsing once per week after school for only an hour each time!

Show Choir

Show Choir is BRAND NEW at Sacred Heart!

We are so excited to offer this energetic, dance-based choral format starting in January 2019 (when Mrs. Waldbrook comes back from mat. leave!)

So... what is a show choir?

  • Think Broadway musicals - great singing, great dancing, great costumes!

  • Non-standard rehearsals - there is no sitting. It's all about movement.

  • This is a workout - you WILL get fitter by participating.

  • This ensemble will travel and compete on the same trips as the Concert Band.

  • If you already play an instrument, you CAN join the choir - Mrs. Waldbrook directs both so there will never be a rehearsal conflict.

  • Remember that improving your singing skills WILL help you with your instrument work, too.

All students are welcome to join, whether you take music in Sec. III-V or not (this is after-school only - no class time association).

Due to the intense requirements of show preparation, students are asked to make a firm commitment to the once-a-week after school rehearsal. Missing more than 3 rehearsals in a concert season (for ANY reason) will mean losing your spot until the next season starts. (There are two concert seasons per year - August to December, and January to May.)

NO AUDITIONS are required. Just come to the first rehearsal - see posters at school for date/ time/ location. If you decide to join after the first 3 rehearsals of the season, you may join at the start of the next season.

Junior Bands

The Junior Bands are comprised of students in Secondary II, performing in their homeroom class groupings.

These bands perform 2 major concerts per year. Additionally, small ensembles of these students may play at school events like the Christmas Bazaar.

These bands serve as feeders to the Concert Band as well as an important tool to teach ensemble values (like teamwork and tuning) and performance practice.

Typically, one optional outing per school year is offered to allow students to experience professional-level instrumental music in person. We try to get tickets in the choir seats section to allow students an excellent view of the musicians!

Chapel Choir

Chapel Choir is an entirely voluntary chorus of singers who lead the congregation during full-school masses, seated on the side pews near the pianist. Mrs. Waldbrook will tell you what to sing and when to stand up!

Students may join at any time throughout the year and there are no practices. Each student will be given a set of music and audio recordings of their parts to learn when they have time. This music is selected to be easily learned and is a great way to improve ear training - highly recommended for students who intend to continue in music at the CEGEP and university levels.

Students receive housepoints for participation and remember:

"Those who sing pray twice!"

While we wait for our new music room, see if you can find all 14 music trophies spread throughout the school!
